Short CV - Prof. Dr. Stephan Nekolla
Stephan G. Nekolla is Director of Medical Physics at the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Technical University of Munich .
Research interests
Prof. Dr. Nekolla's research areas are design, acquisition and analysis of PET, SPECT, MRI and CT studies, workflow considerations and quantification methods in clinical and preclinical studies. His primary focus is on the optimal use of non-invasive imaging to understand disease mechanisms in cardiology and oncology, their detection and therapy assessment. In particular, the use of hybrid devices such as SPECT/CT, PET/CT and PET/MRI systems, and their optimal use in cardiac and oncology imaging is of particular importance.
He is the author/co-author of more than 260 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and review articles. According to the Publons database, the articles have been cited over 11000 times (H-index: 60, L-1857-2013). He is or was PI or co-PI in several national or EU-funded projects involving complex imaging and analysis protocols.
Professional background
After studying physics at the University of Würzburg (1983-1989) and his diploma thesis at the Institute of Biotechnology on "Fourier Analysis based Signal Analysis in Membrane Proteins", he obtained his PhD at the Institute of Physics of the University of Würzburg (Chair: A. Haase) on "Postprocessing in Quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance" (1989-1993) before moving to Munich.
Memberships
Dr. Nekolla is chairman of the Medical Physics Committee of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine, ESMIT representative in the Physics Committee of the European Society of Nuclear Medicine and member of the ESC/EACVI Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT Section.
He is a member of the German Society of Cardiology , Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and a member of the Deustcehn Society for Medical Physics.
Within the interdisciplinary imaging network of the Technical University of Munich he is Senior Affiliated Lecturer at the Chair of Computer Aided Medical Procedures & Augmented Reality (CAMPAR), member of the MunichHeartAlliance (MHA) and member of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK).
